Dedicating 20+ years to one company is quickly becoming a thing of the past 💨
The likelihood of switching new roles within 3-5 years is certainly more common 👍🏿with this generation, and as such we're spending more time being the #NewCommas 😉.
The first 90 days (often the probationary period) in a new role from navigating through new work cultures and people as well as the tasks 📚 at hand etc can be DAUNTING 😱.
"Joining a new company is akin to an organ transplant and you're the new organ. If you're not thoughtful in adapting to the new situation, you could end up being attacked by the organizational immune system andrejected." - writes Michael D. Watkins in the First 90 Days.
In his book, "The First 90 Days" Watkins breaks down the things you should be focusing on during this transition period to ensure a smooth transition 🛼🛼🛼.
Don’t be afraid to let your personality sparkle and shine ✨ ; greet those you’re to be working with, and establish your good intentions from the get go.
A good and strong 💪🏿 first impression is enough to set the foundation for great relationships in the workplace 🗂.
Having an open mind 🤯 when entering a new working environment allows you to objectively determine a new way forward ➡️.
Don’t be stuck in your ways of old 👴🏿. A new environment presents the perfect opportunity to do things differently 🎊! This is exciting and refreshing.
Deliberate over your methods of old, if something wasn’t working, this is your chance to tweak it until something gives ☝🏿.
Don’t be so quick to make a judgement, a decision or a choice 🫵🏿.
In observing before you act you leave room for you to perhaps make an error and alternatively make better choices👌🏾 . It also allows you to identify the real issues at hand this way.
Observing first helps you to gain the trust of your colleagues 👩🏿🏫👨🏾🏫🧑🏽🏫. You show that you’re someone who can make measured 📏 and concise choices. Therefore, your opinion and words hold weight 🏋🏿♂️ and can be valued.
Defining what success✨ means to you means you’re not pitting yourself against others creating imaginary competition in your head 🧠, it means you’re second to no one since your standards and road is personalised 🚗 for just you.
All the pressures that were once there are no longer there. You are committing yourself to doing right by you based on your goals 🎯and values.
The ease that comes with this is invaluable and will contribute infinitely towards building 🧱 relationships at work that are more than competitive alliances and have a chance to be genuinely fruitful 🍇 .
One-man marching bands 🥁 are a thing of the past. You don’t have to do it all, all the time, and all at once 😮💨.
A common tendency of newbies is to take everything on in a bid to look great 😏 .
Biting off more than you can chew to impress people can easily set you up for failure ❎.
Instead, set realistic expectations for yourself.
What feels manageable?
What do you know is attainable?
Of course leaving room for growth 📈and meeting heights you’ve not met before, but also remembering that you are a human 🙋🏿♀️ who has a set capacity that needs to be respected 🫱🏽🫲🏿.
Great leaders, incredible and dedicated workers are not just working above us, they’re also working alongside us 🤩🤩🤩.
Don't just focus on the relationships with people higher up in the business, everyone plays a key 🔑 role in the company's objectives.
The opportunity for fruitful 🍉 work connections that inspire you to drive forwards and teach you invaluable lessons can come from those all around us.
Make the most of them! 😌
You don’t have to solely set your sights on those big and dramatic wins 🥇.
A small feat here and there is enough to build positive momentum 🪨 and reassures your new team that you're the right person for the job 👩🏿🚀.
Getting all those little things right paves the way for you to secure your ultimate win of being great at your job and always improving 😎.
Coming in all guns🔫 blazing is cool and all, but pocketing those smaller wins can add up to be something monumental too 💣.
As a newbie creative, it’s natural that you want to do all you can to cement your place in the field 🌾, be likeable to your colleagues and be flawless at your very new role.
Those goals are brilliant 👏🏾, after all, dreaming 💭 big is where it’s at.
But remember that whole fable of the tortoise 🐢 and the hare 🐇 and how going slow and steady was enough to win the race? That can be applied here too!
Focusing on those smaller things such as being kind to your colleagues, working collaboratively with those alongside you, those all count as big wins too and when they add up those seemingly very little things make a huge impression on those you work with 🙌🏿🙌🏿.
Be gentle with yourself, you’re doing something new. Stay true to yourself, and all else falls in line 〰 after that.
