Ideas are the building blocks of ideas 🧱
We've all had the classic creative slump where we feel uninspired and caught up in everything else but what we need to create 🥲.
How about a new perspective on things?
Maybe the “bad idea” you’ve been looking at has been a good idea all along 🤷🏿♀️.
Or perhaps, it’s time to stop habitually forcing yourself to churn out creations like you’re a machine and let up a little 🙂.
As unheard of as it might be, creating requires you to routinely give your mind that much-needed pause for all of the inspiration to come flooding back 🌊🌊🌊.
We’ve got a number of tricks to raise your creative spirits.
So let’s get into it so that you can get back to what you’re great at! 🤪🤪🤪
Really and truly, there is no such thing as failure ❌ in the process of creating, there is only doing something in a way you have not done before and in a way you are new to.
Things simply didn’t go to plan 🗺 , couldn’t that be an opportunity to do things another way?
To stretch yourself as a creative and REALLY see what you’re capable of? 🤙🏿
There is always a new insight you can find within something that didn't work out the way you expected it to 🤓.
To create, you need to live life, so you have experiences that inspire your work.
Living life doesn’t just mean going out and having fun, it can also mean having the luxury to pause and imagine 🤯.
To run away with your fantasies for a while and think of life outside what you know 🤔.
In imagining a life outside the tangible, the known, and the definite, you get to explore the idea that there is something more out there. More which is possible.
In this sense, work is just as important as play when it comes to honing your craft 🌀. Put this hoping and dreaming into your art. Grasp at new concepts in your creations.
Your dreaming is vital not just for incredible creations but to keep society moving ➡️ towards something potentially kinder, better and more light-hearted.
As a creative, it is your 👉🏿 responsibility to keep dreaming and hoping possible for all of humanity.
For many creatives emotion ❤️ underpins so many of their greatest creations which we know and love today.
The reason for that is because emotion signals something so distinctly human that we all can appreciate when looking at a piece of work. It calls to us because innately what we do isn’t only driven by the instinct to survive but by feeling and sentiment ☺️😝😡😳😰🫣😏.
Emotions offer a level of authenticity that nothing else does.
People look at a piece of work and assess it for how well it communicates those abstract universal feelings that in spite of language barriers are able to reach us all 🥹.
It's fine to simply exist sometimes, in fact, it can be pretty damn useful🤙🏿.
As a creative, you need time to just aimlessly ponder or do things outside of work. That tends to be when your best ideas 💡 come to you or when your inspiration hits because you’re not forcing it 😑.
What would 8-year-old you do with an empty art canvas if they had the chance?
What ideas would erupt onto the page? 🌋
What inspired or ignited their creativity?
You’re not that much different from that version of yourself. They’re still very much present.
Why not let their voice be heard in whatever medium of your choosing or speciality? How would they go about creating, and what is stopping you from doing it that way now?
Only now, you have the ✨speciality and skills ✨ to hone it further but the childlike essence to give it enough flair and ambition so that you’re staying true to all of your childlike fantasies and dreaming.
Looking at the world through the eyes of a child helps you to see the world for what it is and what it could be…
Spice it up.
Don’t get used to seeing the same 🫣old faces, the same old scene and working with the same old vibe.
Something as simple as working from a different space in the office, a new coffee shop, or a coworking space could add life and zest ⚡️ to your work.
Creativity calls for you to be spontaneous, not just on the page but in your practices as they interfere with what lands on the page 🤩.
As a creative, you must have room to do things out of the ordinary frequently. This can range from the space you’re working in, the practices you use, to the people you surround yourself with that influence your work.
You know those people who just put in a fire 🔥 in your belly and excite you to the point where you feel like you’re bubbling 🫧 in your seat and your mind reaches 🤲🏿 for ideas you never envisioned before?
Yes.
The answer is yes.
Be around them as much as you can! Being around people that increase your want to create differently, or create more is absolutely invaluable 😳😳😳.
You’re sure to learn a thing or two from them, so keep them close! 👭🏿
Being a creative is often sold as constantly flowing 💧with fresh ideas, easily and often.
As a creative (in the real NOT imaginary world), you’ll find that that’s not always the case.
In fact, it can be much like those movie depictions where a character who looks super stressed 😣 and strung out has locked themselves into a room, lightly banging their head on the desk, with a clock 🕥 looming over their head to serve as a reminder of how much time they’re taking up NOT creating 🙊🙉🙈.
That should tell you enough.
Creativity can’t be approached in the way so many other careers and jobs are. You can’t lock yourself in a room at a desk and force yourself to churn out ideas 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾.
Each creator's process is specific to them, but there are several things all great creatives share the tendency to do (as explored in detail above! 🆙).
